Beside Still Waters Farm
Plan a Private Elopement Farm B&B in Northern California

Elopements have changed. What was once understood as a rushed, secretive alternative to a ‘real’ wedding has become, for many couples, the most intentional and meaningful way to get married. Choosing to elope — particularly to a private natural setting in Northern California — is increasingly a statement of values: an investment in the experience of the day itself, rather than the performance of it.

Beside Still Waters Farm has been welcoming guests since 1998. We now offer formal elopement packages, and this guide explains exactly how a private farm elopement works — what we provide, what you arrange, and what a day of it actually feels like.

Why a Farm B&B Makes the Best Elopement Setting

The elopement setting question is the first one couples typically wrestle with. Courthouse steps, city parks, winery gardens, and national park vistas are all popular choices. A private farm in Mendocino County offers something that most of these alternatives cannot: complete privacy, a natural setting of genuine beauty, and the logistical convenience of having accommodation, meals, and amenities on-site.

At Beside Still Waters Farm, your elopement takes place on 21+ acres of private mountain land. There are no other wedding parties, no competing events, no strangers walking through the ceremony space. The farm is yours for the duration of your stay, and the specific setting for your ceremony — whether that’s the meadow, the hillside, or another location on the property — is chosen with you.

The setting that makes this privacy possible is the same seclusion that defines every stay at the farm. Our post on why being 8 miles off Highway 101 is the whole point explains the particular quality of privacy and quiet that Beside Still Waters provides.

What Beside Still Waters Farm’s Elopement Package Includes

Our elopement packages are designed to handle the logistical dimensions of the day so that you can focus entirely on the experience of it. The specifics of each package are customised to the couple, but core elements include:

  • Ceremony space on the farm property — chosen with you in advance
  • Romantic cottage accommodation — including the Stepping Stones cottage with whirlpool tub and steam shower for the wedding night
  • In-cottage breakfast the morning after — our full breakfast service, served in your cottage at whatever time you choose
  • Welcome amenities in the cottage on arrival — including wines from Husch Vineyards
  • Personalised touches arranged in advance — flowers, specific requests, additional romantic extras

What You Arrange: The Officiant and Legal Requirements

California elopements require a marriage license, obtained from any California county clerk’s office. You can obtain your license from Mendocino County (the closest option for farm elopements) and it remains valid for 90 days from issuance. There is no waiting period in California — the license is valid immediately.

You will need a licensed officiant for your ceremony. California has broad provisions for who can legally officiate a wedding, including Universal Life Church ministers (which a friend or family member can become online), as well as professional wedding officiants who are familiar with the Mendocino County area. We can recommend local officiants who have worked at private Mendocino County ceremonies if you prefer.

Witnesses: The Intimate Guest Question

California law requires two witnesses to the marriage in addition to the officiant. For couples eloping privately, this is typically handled by bringing two people who are genuinely close to them — the intimacy of a two-witness ceremony is one of the qualities that makes the experience so distinct from a traditional wedding. Some couples choose us and a colleague from the farm as witnesses, and we are honoured to serve in that role when asked.

The Day Itself: What a Farm Elopement Feels Like

The day of a farm elopement at Beside Still Waters is genuinely different from any other form of wedding day. There is no schedule to manage, no vendors to coordinate, no guests to greet or seat. There is a ceremony, in a natural setting of uncommon beauty, witnessed by the people who matter most to you. And then there is the rest of the day — on 21+ acres of private farm, with access to the farm’s amenities, and the specific quality of peace that comes from having done something important and done it exactly right.

For couples who are attracted to the elopement format but wondering whether a farm setting or an intimate hotel retreat is the better choice, our post on why intimate retreats work better in a 3-cottage setting than a hotel addresses this question directly.
